I feel pretty lucky to have spent 3 years wandering the grounds (and occasionally attending class) at Melbourne Uni back in my late teens. If the proposed deregulation of universities goes through, the cost of a course at an institution like this will increase significantly, to the point where you would really have to make it worth your while to attend.
Maybe that’s a good thing; I might have actually pursued a career that was in-line with the course I had studied, rather than buggering off around the world for 2 years before deciding ‘it wasn’t for me’.
But I do think it’s a shame that this lawn will change from a laid-back melting pot of different cultures and backgrounds to one of exclusivity.
I wonder what the Nordic countries make of it all.
